Oil on gold leaf on eight wooden panels

About the work

In his series ‘Vistas’, Stefan Peters shows images with a strong landscape character, which are entirely made up of brushstrokes. Experimental research in the discipline of painting (paint and color) is always present in his work. With these brushstrokes he models, so to speak, the landscape from color gradients. Landscapes with rocks, forests, mountains, fields and paths seem to appear before our eyes, but if we look closely, we only see brushstrokes. It is curious how these vistas have such a suggestive power and seem almost photographic from a distance. The suggestion of the view through airplane windows might come to mind.

In addition, his works shows a color study, as if there were bands of color that cross the landscape, referencing to classical landscape painting throughout art history. Underneath the paint shimmers a background of gold leaf on which he painted his vistas, adding another layer to his experiments with paint and color.

The work invites you to have a second look at the paintings and makes you wonder about what it is you see.
