Merijn Bolink
Button-Phi, 2021-23
Manipulated tree leaves in wooden showcase
150x30x18 cm

About the work

This work is an attempt of the artist to capture a moment in time of the rapid development of artificial intelligence. Bolink took a leaf of a sycamore tree and changed its shape into a button by using laser cut technology. A picture of this button-shaped leaf had then been uploaded to a Pinterest board. Pinterest, by default, suggests 300 matching images for every image uploaded, and Bolink chose one of them as a source for the next leaf in the chain. This new image had been translated into a second laser-cut leaf, the second leaf into a third. This loop repeated six times, resulting in a total of 18 leaves. The last leaf, representing the Greek letter phi, is a remarkable one, since phi is a natural number which is recurring when making math models of how leaves of plants and trees are positioned on their stems in order to optimise the exposure to sunlight.

About the artist

Merijn Bolink (1967) is a sculptor who investigates themes like artificial intelligence, consciousness and the digital revolution. Bolink considers the internet an oracle and is looking for forms of intelligence and even of a soul on the other side of the screen. However, the traditional sculpture methods he uses to express his ideas camouflage the contemporary context at first sight. Existing objects often form the basis of Bolink’s sculptures; a tree branch takes on a new shape, an armchair turns into a chameleon, a bronze sculpture becomes a digital file. According to Bolink, meaning is not static, but always in motion. Probably nothing is what we think it is. With his work he suggests new meanings for objects which seem familiar but aren’t.

Solo and group exhibitions include Langart Amsterdam (2023), Art Rotterdam (2021), Intelligence Artificielle, Musée de la Main, Lausanne, Switzerland (2022), About Trees, Zentrum Paul Klee, Bern, Switzerland (2015),  9th Gyeonnggi Intl Ceramic Biennale, PR South Korea (2015) and many others.

You can find art works of Merijn Bolink in public space in several cities in The Netherlands, a.o. Assen, The Hague, Hoorn, Enschede, Amsterdam, Leiden and Apeldoorn.
